Hiking to Fight Veteran Suicide

On Saturday, December 3rd, 2022, the non-profit Irreverent Warriors hosted its annual Las Vegas Silkies hike. The organization hosts hikes worldwide, visiting major cities like San Diego, New York, Houston, and London. Irreverent Warriors seeks to improve mental health and fight against suicide among military veterans through camaraderie and humor.

Veterans flew in from around the country to attend the event, excited to meet with friends and peers. The 6-mile hike wound through Las Vegas’ historical downtown and Arts District, with stops included along the way for veterans to eat, drink, and socialize. The walk was hosted at the American Legion Post 8, a prominent veteran’s social organization in the valley.

Around 90 veterans attended the hike, many toting patriotic flags and wearing military and American flag-themed outfits. Veterans of the event were easy to spot, their ruck-sacks and backpacks covered in lanyards from previous hikes. Some attendees even carried boomboxes on their shoulders, blasting classic tunes throughout the walk.

Event coordinator Luke Bialczak led the group on the road throughout the day. This was his second time coordinating the hike, and he enjoyed everything about it. “Every year, I get to hear how the hike has changed lives,” he said. “People tell me how it got them out of the house to meet other veterans.”

As the group of veterans trekked through the bustling Freemont Street and Arts District, they were met by curious onlookers and supportive tourists visiting the city. Hike attendees belted out songs, held conversations, and shared laughs along the route, contributing to the relaxed yet lively event.

Near the end of the event, the group found their way back to the hike’s starting point. Hugs were shared, and plans were made between veterans to prepare for the next Irreverent Warrior Silkies hike. More information about upcoming hikes, how to donate, and how to get involved can be found on the Irreverent Warriors website.
