Veterans Hunting for Adventure

Recently, veteran Marine Scott Robinson went on an extraordinary bear hunting trip to Canada with several veterans in tow as part of the Nevada Outdoor Adventure Foundation. He said the goal was to introduce them to a community of fellow veterans while sharing his love of nature and hunting with them. Life can be challenging after separating from the military, and finding connections with peer-to-peer support can be life-changing for some.

“These camping and hunting trips are to help change veteran’s mindset, help them network, and find a new healthy hobby,” Robinson said when asked why the foundation was started, “You would be surprised at how many of the veterans that come along on these trips become good friends and continue to go on adventures together.”

He said the foundation was founded in Fargo, North Dakota, but has grown to 8 chapters throughout the country. In Nevada, the trips they go on help around eight veterans a month, with thousands more served through event tickets, like NASCAR, in the Valley.

The foundation relies on donations throughout the year, and its annual banquet is a vital fundraising event. This year’s banquet was successful in raising enough money to support their current operations, but Robinson says, “… we need to raise more money if we want to grow the foundation and help more veterans.” According to a study done by 24/7 Wall Street, the veteran population in Nevada is the 10th highest in the nation, showing there are thousands more veterans that could be reached in the city.

The Nevada Outdoor Adventure Foundation is open to all veterans that would like to get involved. Anyone is welcome to attend next year’s annual banquet in July, where raffles and auctions are used for fundraising. Whether you would like to donate, attend, volunteer, or simply learn more, the foundation welcomes all support. The website offers links for getting involved or applying for an adventure with them.
